Hi, and welcome to my blog! I'm Mr. Clements and I teach grade 5 at St. Joseph Elementary School in River Canard.
Feb. 20, 2013
This morning 5C spent time down in the computer lab working on our individual blogs. Some of the students had some trouble logging in because they were unable to remember their email addresses and passwords, and we had the usual compute glitches take place, but nothing too disastrous. Most of the kids were able to get some work done and tell me about their Family Day experiences or some things they have been learning from the teacher candidates in my room. The blogs look pretty good, and the kids are getting better at navigating through the site. I look forward to seeing them in the upcoming weeks.
The teacher candidates will be working on new reading and writing strategies over the next couple week. QUESTIONING will be the focus in reading, and CONVENTIONS will be the focus in writing.
Here is a cute video that talks a little about the purpose and usefulness of QUESTIONING as we read:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5Xw9yoYCRY
For a little more information on CONVENTIONS, you can check out this website if you have the time.

In SCIENCE we'll be focusing on STRUCTURES and the forces that act on them, we'll be continuing with our study of decimals and math and we'll continue our look at LENT and what it means to us as CHRISTIANS in religion. That's it for now. Hope you all had a happy Family Day weekend. Check back soon.
March 1, 2013
Welcome back. To those who have taken time to check this site out.....THANKS! Only a week left before the March Break and a week left for student teachers to get in some good stuff. Next week will be busy as we ready for the Break. Tests in language, science and math will be on the agenda Wednesday and Thursday, and some big assignments will be coming due as well, including an assignment that has the kids designing a natural disaster proof building! Hope to see lots of good stuff come in...... We'll also be continuing on our Lenten journey, (the kids have taken quite well to the idea of giving up their morning snacks for Lent) learning more about the Stations of the Cross and the meaning they hold for each of us. Next week we should also (finally) be ready to kick-off our school-wide Lenten project. More about that next week, but, for a sneak peek, you can take a look here:
http://resources.crs.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/crs-rice-bowl-and-the-usccbs-catholic-relief-services-collection-crs-rice-bowl-2013.pdf
For those reading closely, you'll notice the mention of the USA receiving 25% of the raised funds. Of course, the funds we raise will remain here. In fact, it is our hope that 25% of all that is raised will go to St. Joseph church. As I said, more on that to come. Sticking with the theme of rice, the school is also hoping to promote this very simple and worthwhile project:

Please log on early and often.
On the sports front, Mr. Bujold and myself have started badminton practices. Can't believe how many kids we had trying out! Great to see. If only our gym was bigger.... The girls basketball team won a controversial playoff game on Thursday night--for a time. Turns out it was so controversial though, that the game needs to be replayed on Monday night. Come on out and support the girls!
And that's about it for me. Hope you all have a great weekend and I'll be back again sometime next week.
P. S. Be sure to leave me a comment in the comment box to let me know what you think of the site!

So, I just wanted to take this time to wish everyone a safe and healthy (and relaxing!) March Break. Things get back to a semblance of normal when we get back, and we start the final chapter of the school year. Only about 3 months left if you can believe it. Looking forward to some good things in the coming months. Stay safe and happy and be sure to check back after the Break.
March 20, 2013
Hello again. Hope everyone had themselves a restful and fun-filled Break. I had a great time in Florida with my family. Not as warm as it has been, but still, a great week. Just a little information on some things you can expect in the next few weeks. My class will continue to work on their blogs, and they will be expected to update it weekly. They are urged to write more updates though at home. I`ve had a great time reading and following along. Some of them are really turning out exceptionally well. We`ll be doing some work with PREZI coming up in the next little while as well, so we can build some cool computer presentations. For a preview, check out http://prezi.com/
In math, we`ll be continuing to focus on Transformational Geometry, a tricky area for a lot of students so we`ll be taking it slow. The kids did some very nice work making PARABOLAS in class. If I can, I`ll try and get a couple of the good one scanned and posted here in the next couple days.
In language, we`ll be working on MAIN IDEAS in reading, and SENTENCE FLUENCY in writing. Both have been focuses throughout the year, but we`ll be looking a little more in-depth at each. We`ll be using the Kipling story, RIKKI-TIKKI-TAVI (one of my personal faves) to explore these areas.
In science, we`ve started our unit on ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS by looking at the father of Evolution, Darwin. We`ve begun discussing the idea of evolution and the way it fits in with God`s design. We`ll be taking a close look at the current views of human origins before moving on to the first people`s and the earliest civilizations. It`s my favourite topic of the year and I can`t wait to get into it!
In religion we`ll continue examining the Stations of the Cross as we approach (rapidly!) Easter Sunday.
And that`s about it. As usual, any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to drop me a message in the contact box below. Talk to you all soon.

Just a quick update. We'll be doing an art lesson shortly and I thought I would provide a link to it here. It's a great cultural craft, and matches well with our current story, which is set in India. The site is very good, with lots of examples and even a tutorial for extra help. Hope you like it and I really look forward to getting some great looking artwork. Here is the art lesson:
http://www.art-is-fun.com/henna-hand-designs.html
Along with the art lesson, here is a fun little game to play to help work on discovering the main idea in a piece of text:
http://www.quia.com/pop/120023.html
And for those parents (and kids!) who want to know a little more about what I'm looking for when I stress sentence fluency, here is a good site that helps explain things. It is a little lengthy, but it is quite complete and has some good examples:

Take care and Happy March Madness! :)

Greetings! just wanted to fill you all in on a couple of things. Math has been going pretty well, after a slow start. transformational geometry has been a challenge for some, but the quizzes have been done pretty well for the most part. Another quiz tomorrow to further consolidate some learning before we move on to some easier topics.
Evolution has been going well--kids have been VERY interested in the concepts, and in some of the current, scientific theory relating to our origins. The class loved ARDI (our 4.4 million year old ancestor!) and we'll be moving up the evolutionary chain in the following few days. A little more information about ARDI can be found below:
http://news.discovery.com/history/archaeology/ardi-human-ancestor.htm
On Thursday afternoon, we are fortunate enough to have a guest speaker coming in. Her name is Amanda Black and she is the president of the Windsor branch of the Ontario Archaeological Society. First time I've ever had someone come in from the Society, so I am very much looking forward to having her come to my class.
We've continued study of the Stations of the Cross, and I would urge those who have not been to church to witness the Stations to take some time to attend.
And that's pretty much it for the moment. Hopefully everyone has a great Easter weekend, and I'll be back soon.
April 8th, 2013
Hidey-ho everyone. Sorry I missed a week last week. Very busy last week with tests and assignments coming due. I was trying to get things done so our new guests (our two new student teachers, Ms. Rawlings and Ms. Twumasi (pronounced CHO-massy)) could begin their work on Monday. Tests were done extremely well (maybe the highest marks of the year) so I was very pleased by that. And our archaeological guest speaker last week was a big hit. She showed the kids some neat artefacts imparted lots of great information. I'll be sure to have her back again next year.
Anyway, our student teachers will be doing some fun things with the kids this month including some great computer-related work revolving around GOOGLE DOCS and PREZI. Here is a brief video that talks a little about some of the advantages of Google Docs, an awesome tool that kids will be able to use and access at home once they have been given their login information:
Should be fun. In math, they will be doing some work on fractions and decimals. A review of sorts with some new material thrown in.
Our next science unit is CONSERVATION OF ENERGY. The kids will be learning all about energy, its uses and the ways we can work on saving it. They will also be doing a unit on dance, complete with a project that will be due at the end of the month involving study and research on a specific cultural dance that the students will be able to choose.
In language, the focus on reading will be on finding the MAIN IDEA in a piece of text, and in writing we will be looking more closely at SENTENCE FLUENCY and what it takes to write good, readable sentences.
That's it for the moment. As always, please feel free to drop me a message and let me know if this has been helpful or to ask any questions you might have. Take care and.... GO BLUE!!!
April 14th, 2013,
Hello again. Just a quick update for the upcoming week. Our student teachers will be here for another 10 days. They continue to focus on math, language, science and dance. There will be a large dance assignment/project coming due in the next 10 days, and next week will see math and science tests, as well as a language assessment on sentence fluency and picking out main ideas and important details in texts.
Students will also be completing their POINTILLISM artwork for Wednesday, and will be working on Google Docs (students have been given all their login information and are free to start experimenting with DOCS at anytime.....) this week along with getting a chance to update their own blogs. I will be assessing their blogs in the next couple weeks, so hopefully you parents and guardians out there have been looking at them and encouraging them to update and add interesting and fun information to them. They will be assessed as part of their language mark on their report cards and will go toward their media literacy marks, oral/visual marks and of course, their writing marks. The blogs are an important assessment tool, so it's important that students do the best they can to make them stand out. Be sure to check the CLASS BLOGS page of my own blog to get a good look at what some of the students have been doing.
A quick note for parents: if your child is working on their blogs at home, and you do not use Google Chrome as your browser, updating the blogs could be a bit of a problem. Weebly functions better on Chrome (as do most things I find) than on Firefox or Explorer. Chrome will also become our school`s default browser in the upcoming months so if you could download it for the students, it might save a little frustration. If you`re interested, I`ve included a button below that will take you to the CHROME download page. It only takes a few seconds. That`s it. Hope everyone had a good weekend. As always, any questions or concerns or comments, please don`t hesitate to drop me a message below. Take care.

Hello. Just wanted to make a quick mention of a topic we will be looking more closely at next month: MEDIA AND DIGITAL LITERACY. We have already completed a pretty extensive look at BODY IMAGE and how it is portrayed in media. Some of you may have been introduced to the DOVE EVOLUTION video I shared in class. If not, this is the one I am referring to:
A pretty remarkable video. In the unit we talked extensively about the nature of various media, and how media shapes and affects our perceptions. Next month we will continue looking at the way media impacts our lives, but we will be focusing on safety and some of the many problems inherent in living in a 'digital age'. As preparation for the upcoming topic, I am posting a website that has loads of excellent information. It also has several videos and online games to help teach the fundamentals of media and digital literacy. I strongly urge parents and students alike to visit the site and spend some time looking at some of the information. Not only is it great general knowledge to have, it will help prepare the students for the upcoming unit. Hope you can find some time to take a look.

So, time for another update. Only a couple of days left for our student teachers who have been a big help. Science and math tests this week as well as some language assessments and a dance project. The projects so far have been GREAT, very impressive, and I look forward to seeing more in the next couple days.
We are actually closing in on the end of the year more quickly than I can believe. Only 7 or 8 solid weeks left to cover curriculum-related material. I hope the students can remain focused, and parents, I need you to really keep a check on AGENDAS in the next few weeks. I have a large number of incomplete and missing assignments from some students. PLEASE CHECK AGENDAS REGULARLY. In that time we have to finish our social studies unit on Ancient Civilizations, (we will start by looking at the first farmers and the earliest recorded civilization, MESOPOTAMIA, then move on to ANCIENT GREECE. After that we will see how much time we have left and perhaps take a quick look at the ANCIENT CELTS...) Below is a link to some information on Mesopotamia.
http://www.mesopotamia.co.uk/
In math we will be looking at some more patterns, and do some probability, but first we will look at MEASUREMENT starting next week and focus on AREA and PERIMETER.
In Fully Alive we will be getting into the Third Unit, dealing with SEXULAITY, so expect some interesting questions at home, and some interesting discussion. Parents, please engage in active discussion with your children on this topic, ask them questions. It is, at times, a difficult topic for students to deal with, but it is one that most find fascinating. We approach it as scientists and Christians, with respect and openness.
In computers, we have started our look at both PREZI and GOOGLE DOCS and we will continue to look at and use both. We will also continue with our BLOGS. By the end of the year, the BLOGS will be assessed, so I hope you (parents) are checking out your children's BLOGS regularly and helping them come up with some things to write about and share.
In language, we will be rounding out our look at reading strategies, with the most complex of all strategies--SYNTHESIS. Synthesis brings to bear a combination of all the previous strategies. For a better understanding of the concept, click the button below and enter INTO THE BOOK.

As a quick aside--any students out there interested in playing basketball, I highly recommend the Villanova Camp on Tuesday nights. My own daughters are in the camp, and it is run extremely well, and is a LOT of fun. Kids learn the basics and have fun doing it. Coach Colin Lesperance and his team do a fantastic job. It's a great place to learn to love the game.
That is pretty much it. Talk to you soon.

Hello again everyone. Time for another update. EDUCATION WEEK is upon us this week, and it will be BUSY! A couple music concerts (Tues. and Thurs.) a TRACK MEET to determine our school's best track athletes (Wed.), a DRUMMERSIZE program (Tues.) and a school mass on Wednesday morning put on by the students at Villanova. We also had student pictures this morning! Whew.... All that adds up to a week crammed with good stuff. In class, we've started our IMAGINATION WEEK (which will be more like 2 weeks for sure....) and we continue to look at the idea of SYNTHESIS in various types of text.
In social studies we will continue our look at MESOPOTAMIA and the early SUMERIANS in particular, while in math we continue our MEASUREMENT unit and look at metric conversions and area and perimeter. The conversions seemed to go well today but I'll throw up a little video here for those who'd like to see the material presented in a slightly different way:

We have pretty much concluded our discussions in Family Life on sexuality. The class, on the whole, handled the subject pretty well, and more were mature about the topic. A test on the material is coming up on Wednesday. Not much else to report. If you've not checked out some of the class sites yet, be sure to do so. Some of the students have done a great job reorganizing and fixing up their sites. That's it for now. Til next time.

That time again. Time for a quick update. Not much time left in the year. Kids really need to focus these last few weeks. Some very big projects and marks coming up that will reflect heavily on their report card grades. We have a large language assignment due that involves the making of a map and a sketchbook (check out some images from Darwin's sketchbook for some ideas):
http://darwin-online.org.uk/graphics/SpecimenIllustrations.html
We will also be doing a CASI reading test at the end of this week, as well as a math test on AREA AND PERIMETER and a social studies test on MESOPOTAMIA.
Next week, we will have our final student teacher coming for a short 2 week visit and this week we will be wrapping up our IMAGINATION WEEK theme with a couple of more amazing books.
Track and field is rigth around the corner as well, (June 4th is the date of the meet) so if any of you out there have made the team, now is the time to get out there and start practicing!
That's about it. Any questions or concerns drop me a message. Til next time.

Hello all. Been a little while, sorry for the delay in posting. Busy time of year. Rapidly winding down the year. Only about 5 weeks or so left. YIKES! Marks have become extremely important. Glad to see some students have really settled down and done some great work. I have gone through and assessed the individual BLOGS. I was very pleased (in general) with the quality of work the students have done. Madeleine Barrette, Madison Reaume and SeMonde Snauwaert among others have done great jobs organizing and putting together very effective blogs. If you get the chance, be sure to check them out.
A few notes as we head down the final stretch into June. We'll be bidding farewell to our last student teacher this week. Mr. Deotta has done a good job for me these last 2 weeks and the kids seemed to enjoy his lessons. He'll be finishing up our penultimate math unit--PROBABILITY--and giving his test this Thursday. He'll also be finishing up his unit on CYBERSAFETY, a very nice unit outlining many of the challenges kids face in an online world. We have also started looking at our next civilization in our ANCIENT CIVILIZATION unit--ancient GREECE. The kids seem to be enjoying it so far. There is a WEALTH of information on the topic online and on youtube should anyone be interested in taking a closer look. In religion, we'll be taking a closer look at some of the stories in the NEW TESTAMENT as well as a closer look at prayer, then we will move on to our final topics in FULLY ALIVE--COMMITMENT and LIVING IN THE WORLD. We'll also be tackling some interesting and challenging art projects in June and I hope to start auditions for a reader's theater play I usually put on in June called THE LEOPARD'S NOISY DRUM. Auditions should begin next week. I'll be looking for the people who can read the most fluently and with the best expression to play the various roles in the play. Here are links to a performance of the play by a different school:

Hidey-ho everyone. So, the year is winding down quickly. As I'm sure the students have told you, we're in the middle of a large art project. Some of the drawings are turning out GREAT! I can't wait to see the finished versions. We're going to be finishing up our last unit on ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS this week, with a final test on Ancient Greece. It's been a fun unit and I think the kids have enjoyed it. We'll also be doing some review of concepts in math. In 2 weeks we have our movie/bowling field trip which is always fun. The students seem pretty excited to see MONSTERS U! I am too. Here's a quick trailer for those who haven't seen it:

I think everyone will agree that it looks pretty funny.... Next week we'll also be finishing up our class TRIATHLONS. We've already finished the sprint portion of the event. Just the discus/frisbee toss and standing long jump to complete. We're also planning on putting together a small picnic lunch one day with our reading buddies in grades 1 and 2. Should be fun.
Our play is turning out pretty well so far. Still need some rehearsing but the students are doing a good job and seem to be very excited to put it on in front of a live audience. I'm looking forward to it as well. And that's about all. Need everyone to stay focused for a couple more weeks, then, let the relaxation start! HAPPY FATHER's DAY to all you dads out there. Have a great weekend.

June 21st
Happy first day of summer everyone! Looks like the weather is finally in agreement with the calendar..... As you all know, this is the next to last week of school. We still have a few things left to get done this week (Play Day with our reading friends and finish up our paintings--which look GREAT, and have received compliment after compliment....) and in the upcoming week though. One more fun art project that we will undertake with the Grade 7 class, lots of packing up, a couple finishing touches on our Ancient Greece unit, some math review for next year as well as a couple fun and interesting stories to polish off. We also have our field trip Tuesday that the class is excited for as well as some reader's theater performances for a number of classes. Going to be a busy week next week....
I just wanted to take this opportunity to say how much I enjoyed this year. It was a great class, with lots of parental support and help whenever needed. I think they've really grown and matured as a class a great deal since that first day in September. I've enjoyed this class immensely, and will be very sorry to have to pass them on. Thanks again to all parents and students for making this, honestly, one of my best year's as a teacher. Hope you all have a safe, relaxing, and above all, blessed summer with you and yours.
Sincerely,
Mr. C
